Eric J. Daza, DrPH, MPS (Founder + Chief Editor)
Dr. Daza is a loving and devoted health data scientist and biostatistician working in the digital health industry. Eric Jay created Stats-of-1. For this innovative work, he was recognized by Forbes and Fortune in 2022, and by the American Statistical Association in 2023. Eric Jay was the Stats-of-1 Lead Editor 2020-2021.
- He introduced the average period treatment effect (APTE) n-of-1 counterfactual framework for understanding each person’s own health causes and effects using their own self-tracked wearable/sensor data, patient-reported outcomes, clinical outcomes, and biomarkers (Daza, 2018; clearer LaTeX notation here). To do so, he introduced the MoTR (“motor”) method for estimating such individual-specific causal effects (Daza and Schneider, in preparation; 2-min explainer video here).
- He’s a biostatistician and data scientist at Evidation. “Our mission is to create new ways to measure and improve health in everyday life.”
- Over the past 20+ years, he’s worked at a pharmaceutical oncology company (in Phase 2 and 3 clinical trials), a clinical research organization, a survey sampling research center, a population studies center (on global maternal child health and nutrition), a health promotion and disease prevention center, and a healthcare tech startup.
- He’s a General Member of the International Collaborative Network (ICN) for N-of-1 Clinical Trials and Single-Case Experimental Designs (SCEDs), and is part of the ever-growing Quantified Self community. Here’s a fun video by his brilliantly witty UNC friends in which he plays a singing statistics professor: A Statistical New World (see ericjdaza.com/videos for more clips)
- He trained as a postdoc at the Stanford Prevention Research Center. Prior to that, he’d earned a DrPH in Biostatistics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and both an MPS in Applied Statistics and BA in Neurobiology / Cognitive Studies at Cornell University.
- He’s delighted to be in a deeply committed long-term relationship with the field of causal inference. It’s complicated.
- He’s a growing population-of-1 that contains multitudes: a set of intra-individual cyclic patterns of measurable outcomes of the same person partitioned by bouts of (sadly inadequate) sleep.

Clair Robbins, PhD (Lead Editor)
Dr. Clair Robbins is a Clinical Psychologist. Clair was a Stats-of-1 co-Lead Editor in 2022, and was the 2023 Lead Editor. She is also the excellent host of our podcast, N-of-5 Minutes.
- She currently works as a clinical psychologist as Triangle Area Psychology Clinic in Durham, NC. She is licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in providing evidence-based treatments to patients who find that strong emotions are interfering in their daily lives.
- Dr. Robbins received her Ph.D. from Boston University in 2019. She was mentored by Dr. David H. Barlow who is an expert in single-case experimental design and treatment development. While in graduate school, she co-authored the second edition of the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (UP), which is a treatment for common mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. During her time in graduate school, she specialized in the application of this treatment to dysregulated anger.
- Dr. Robbins completed a pre-doctoral internship at the Durham VA Medical Center. She completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at Duke University Medical Center where she conducted research assessing and treating misophonia, a condition in which individuals report physiological and emotional reactivity to specific sounds (e.g., chewing). Misophonia is a relatively newly described condition and she enjoyed contributing to this growing field of research (misophonia.duke.edu).
- Prior to graduate school, she received a BA in Psychology from Hamilton College and worked as a research assistant for two years at Massachusetts General Hospital’s Depression Clinical and Research Program.
- In addition to exploring evidence-based strategies for behavior change, she likes to run, hike, cycle, do yoga, and spend time with her dog.
Julio Vega, PhD (Web Developer + Editor)
Dr. Vega is a Computer Scientist. Julio was a Stats-of-1 co-Lead Editor in 2022. He makes sure our podcast, N-of-5 Minutes, sounds amazing.
- He works as a postdoctoral research associate at the Mobile Sensing + Health Institute of the University of Pittsburgh. He is interested in personalized methodologies to monitor chronic conditions that affect daily human behavior using mobile and wearable data.
- He is a supporter of open science and software. He leads the development of the Reproducible Analysis Pipeline for Data Streams (RAPIDS), a community-driven open-source project to standardize the data processing of mobile sensing research. He is also a software contributor to AWARE, a mobile instrumentation framework for logging, sharing, and reusing mobile context.
- Previously, Julio worked as a postdoc at the University of Bristol, exploring binge eating episode detection using smartphone interactions. He also collaborated with the University of Oulu, Finland, on multiple projects to support people with depression and Parkinson’s Disease using mobile sensors and web technologies. In addition, he completed an internship at Microsoft Research UK on Project Emma and was a contributor on a follow-up study with Columbia University.
- In 2019, Julio received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Manchester for investigating a personalized, unobtrusive, and clinical-informed methodology to track fluctuations in Parkinson’s symptoms.
